20.514 Professional Practice I
The course exposes students to the laws and regulations governing professional practice in Singapore. It introduces students to the legal environment and the contractual issues often encountered in practice. It also introduces regulations associated with development control administered by various government authorities and agencies. The course is comprised of two lectures per week with one associated with law and another with regulations.
Learning objectives
- Recognise the legal environment for building contract law and appreciate the various legal issues that may arise in building and construction contracts.
- Understand the relationship between architecture practice, the regulatory frameworks and authorities governing new developments.
- Recognise the obligations, duties and functions of an architect under a building contract and demonstrate knowledge and competency to deal with the various issues which may commonly arise during the course of projects.
- Identify the relevant regulations associated with design typologies, parameters, considerations, and design constraints and appreciate the intent of the frameworks for the built environment and embrace their motivations beyond compliance or compromise of the design intent.
Measurable outcomes
- Identify legal risks and issues pre-contract formation, during the course of a project, and post-completion and interpret the basic principles of the law relating to building and construction contracts.
- Develop documentation adhering to regulatory submission standards for various built environment authorities and acquire professional skills for preparing graphical and non-graphical design information relevant to formal documentation for submissions.
- Describe and apply the legal role and obligations of an Architect when administering a building contract and demonstrate competency to deal with commonly occurring legal issues.
- Demonstrate creativity in incorporating building and planning regulations in design through a concept design exercise.
