20.515 Professional Practice II
This course is a continuation of the previous 20.514 Professional Practice I. It covers topics associated with architecture as a business and laws governing contracts and variations thereof. The course challenges the students to examine critically a broad range of professional, legal, ethical and business problems that they are likely to face in practice.
Learning objectives
- Identify the various standard form building and construction contracts that are in common usage and recognise the legal environment for building contract law various legal issues that may arise in building and construction contracts.
- Understand the architectural practice environment, its key participants, and the different typologies of practices and how to operate a viable practice.
- Recognise the obligations, duties and functions of an architect under a building contract and demonstrate knowledge and competency to deal with the various issues which may commonly arise during the course of projects.
- Understand the key drivers and transformation of the built environment sector and gain awareness of the long-term sustainability of an architectural practice through overseas expansion and succession of talents.
Measurable outcomes
- Use the various standard form building contracts and interpret the basic principles of the law relating to building and construction contracts.
- Develop a full development programme with realistic timeline and provide a sustainable and realistic fee proposal for a sample project.
- Describe and apply the legal role and obligations of an Architect when administering a building contract and demonstrate competency to deal with commonly occurring legal issues.
- Demonstrate understanding through scenario and role playing in a competitive scenario-gaming of a real development process.
Prerequisites
A student should be admitted to the M.Arch programme. This course is required for M.Arch accreditation
